“The regulator decided that Facebook and Instagram cannot ‘force consent’ with the ultimatum that consumers must accept how their data is used, or leave the platform. Certainly this type of wording appears not to place the user front and centre of the experience; so the ruling appears to make sense when it comes to the application of all-important principles of trust and transparency.

“It is our hope that these somewhat unethical practices get stamped out, the global digital marketing industry will ultimately benefit – by devising more user-friendly and forward thinking approaches which benefit all parties within the ecosystem. What’s more, in the current climate, identifying efficiencies and removing barriers is also key to success.”

“The increased attention on Meta’s data sharing (mal)practice lends itself to a shift in ethical data usage; moving from ‘could’ to ‘should’. As such, we may see acceleration in media investment being diverted into advertising which offers alternative ways of collecting and using data.
“Agencies will have to navigate the complexities and operational inefficiencies of programmatic to date, but will gain competitive advantage if they can deliver campaigns outside of the Meta cookie-cutter approach. Meanwhile, brands will demand more transparency on supply and taxonomy to curate their own marketplace based on their independent values.
“In the most part, however, I don’t think it will seismically shift behaviour unless consumers start moving away from Meta.”

“Brands and publishers have gone back to focusing on owned media, as social paid media has become more ‘hostile’ territory, both in terms of user data abuse and restrictions on traffic sharing.
