Hospital for Special Surgery and Lazurite established a collaboration agreement centered on Lazurite's arthrofree wireless surgical camera system.
FREMONT, CA: "We're pleased that a world-class clinical organization like HSS sees the potential for the ArthroFree System to become the standard of care in the minimally invasive OR," says Lazurite President and General Counsel Leah Brownlee. Medical device and technology company Lazurite and Hospital for Special Surgery, one of the world's leading academic medical centers specializing in musculoskeletal health, have collaborated based on Lazurite's ArthroFree" Wireless Surgical Camera System. This is the first wireless surgical camera system to receive FDA clearance for arthroscopy and general endoscopy.
“HSS has been a pioneer in orthopedic research and innovation for decades. The hospital performs more than 32,000 surgical procedures annually, including more hip surgeries and more knee replacements than any other hospital in the country. We believe this will be a beneficial experience for both HSS and Lazurite,” adds Brownlee.

HSS and Lazurite will collaborate through the HSS Innovation Institute to advance surgical techniques and procedures, including the examination of certain features of ArthroFree and the possible co-development of new arthroscopic technologies. HSS will provide training sessions at the HSS Simulation Learning and Training Center and may collaborate with Lazurite on developing future technologies that utilize the ArthroFree wireless camera and Meridiem" light technology.
The ArthroFree System is projected to increase OR efficiency, improve OR safety and reduce customer costs by eliminating conventional camera cords that tether doctors to the surgical tower and impede their movement. The system's solid-state, low-heat, high-efficiency Meridiem light technology promises to avoid patient burns and operating room fires caused by cameras. The modular system is interoperable with existing patient data consoles, surgical screens, and endoscopes available in minimally invasive operating rooms.
Given HSS's extensive research capabilities, including the experience and expertise of its medical staff and the number of orthopedic surgeries performed there, we believe that HSS is an ideal partner to conduct the non-clinical assessments and other collaborations outlined in the agreement, said Lazurite Board Chair Mark Froimson, MD.
“HSS is excited to collaborate with Lazurite to evaluate the ArthroFree Wireless Surgical Camera System, provide insights into the next generation of the existing device, and potentially co-develop other medical device products utilizing this technology," says Michael P. Ast, MD, Chief Medical Innovation Officer and a joint replacement surgeon at HSS. “As HSS physicians and innovators, our goal of continuously improving patient care and outcomes includes identifying and pursuing new technologies and developing partnerships that leverage HSSs expertise and innovative spirit with cutting-edge industry advancements to drive new innovation forward.”
