How Attribution Solutions Helps Companies Overcome Common Technology Challenges
Martech Outlook | Thursday, May 26, 2022
Attribution is conceptually straightforward, as all it takes is a little data tracing, counting, adding, and dividing. It can easily make it work with your systems, data, and processes.
FREMONT, CA: Experienced marketing technologists understand that martech isn't as simple and clear as clicking a button and automatically getting more leads and conversions. They know that feeding junk to technology will result in garbage coming out the other end. And they understand that data quality is the bedrock of everything. However, high-quality data is only the beginning of successful and scalable attribution. Let's take a look at three common pitfalls while using attribution technologies.
Salesforce or no salesforce

All attribution solutions use Salesforce data. A few people use Marketo. But after that, you'll have to write your Python code. Because new martech suppliers and solutions are continually developing at a quick pace, you'll need the flexibility to ingest engagement data from a variety of sources, including
○ CRM (beyond Salesforce)
○ Automated marketing
○ Databases and data warehouses
○ Sales engagement software such as Salesloft and Outreach.io are two examples
○ Your channel partner's data
Incorrect salesforce configuration
Even if most of your engagement data is in salesforce, most attribution solutions assume that your instance is set up generically and that objects like Lead, Contact, Account, and Campaign Memberships are used in "typical" ways. It's never that straightforward if your salesforce instance is more than five years old and you're a huge firm. You resort to doing things that make your salesforce even more cluttered to make it operate against such strict technological limits. We dealt with a large technology business that wanted to include sales meetings in its attribution model. However, their platform only supported the Campaign Membership object.
Custom objects
Unless your salesforce instance is less than three months old, custom objects are a given. They record crucial information about your company's go-to-market strategy. Most attribution systems can only cope with bespoke objects to a limited extent, if at all. A custom object was utilized by one organization to track channel sales and partner influence. Unfortunately, the attribution tool it implemented years ago didn't handle custom objects, necessitating more manual labor.
