Google plans new shopping ad formats, including the upcoming ability for retailers to showcase their wares using AR to generate 3D imagery.
FREMONT, CA: Google Marketing Live was the biggest event in advertising where the company exhibited its products. While the passage of the Digital Advertising Act highlights tensions from outside, renewed offerings in the retail media sector, as well as the impending formal debut of ad units in its YouTube Shorts rival TikTok and signal increased competition in the industry. Google presented its planned new shopping ad formats, which will let businesses advertise their products using augmented reality to create 3D images. This includes allowing companies to incorporate loyalty programs more effectively into their Google ad forms.
Google also demonstrated improvements to its Performance Max campaigns product, which enable improved A/B testing of campaign strategies on desktop and mobile devices, including in-app and mobile web. The company will use its Insights Page to provide marketers with better measurement and attribution services. These services are presently in testing. Google claims they will assist advertisers to optimise their campaigns, including helping them identify potential reasons why their ads may not be succeeding as expected.

The modifications are intended to allow advertisers to present their goods and services to meet customers' demands, according to the VP and general manager of Ads at Google, who spoke to Digiday. Google will provide them a tonne more openness because advertisers have heard loud and clear that they want additional transparency. They are, therefore, familiar with how machine learning functions and have upgraded the existing Local Campaigns and Smart Shopping campaign types to Performance Max.
Updates to Google's Video action and App campaigns were also included in the releases, so marketers utilising these platforms can seamlessly expand their campaigns to YouTube Shorts. As of later this following year, YouTube has also promised advertisers that they will be able to connect their product feed to campaign creatives. With the launch of YouTube
Shorts in the middle of 2020, Google began experimenting with ad formats on the platform. Many see this as a direct competitor to TikTok and possibly Google's best success in the social media space. According to Google, YouTube Shorts now produce more than 30 billion daily views, a 4X growth rate. This surge in usage is a definite sign of consumer desire for a combination of long- and short-form videos.
On the advertising front, in-stream App advertisements and ads from Video action campaigns in YouTube Shorts have been gradually being rolled out and experimented with. It is still unclear whether they will want particular formats that cater to the scrolling engagement produced by shorts; for the time being, the present formats appear to be operating reasonably well.
