Building Brands Through Customer Insight

Natalie Chacin
Natalie Chacin is the Director of eCommerce and Digital Marketing, North America at Marimekko, where she leads digital commerce and customer engagement strategies. With a background spanning fashion design, brand marketing, and eCommerce, she combines creativity, customer insight, and data-driven decision-making to drive sustainable business growth.
From Creative Foundations To Customer-Centric Leadership
My path into eCommerce and digital marketing was not entirely linear. I began my career in fashion design before transitioning into marketing and eCommerce leadership. That journey gave me an appreciation for both the creative side of building a brand and the customer side of understanding what drives purchasing decisions and longterm loyalty.
What initially attracted me to e-commerce was its ability to connect brand, customer experience, and business performance. It offers a unique opportunity to understand how customers discover, engage with, and ultimately choose a brand, while also measuring results.
As consumer expectations have become increasingly digital-first, my leadership approach has shifted from focusing on individual channels to focusing on the complete customer experience and consumer behavior. While technology continues to evolve, customer needs remain remarkably consistent. People want relevance, convenience, authenticity, and value. My role as a leader is to help teams stay grounded in those needs while remaining agile enough to adapt to changing behaviors and technologies.
Understanding The Why Behind Customer Behavior
The most valuable insights go beyond demographics. I want to understand what motivates customers, what problem they are trying to solve, and what triggers them to enter the market. Understanding consumer moments and demand cycles helps brands identify not only who to target, but when and how to engage them.
I also pay close attention to how customers discover brands, evaluate options, and make purchase decisions across channels. The strongest digital strategies align with those behaviors rather than forcing customers into a predetermined path. When brands understand both the emotional and functional drivers behind a purchase, they can create more relevant experiences that build awareness, consideration, and long-term loyalty.
Where Data And Creativity Drive Growth
I do not view data and creativity as competing forces. The most effective marketing combines both. Data helps us understand customer behavior, identify opportunities, and measure results. Creativity helps us capture attention, create emotional connection, and make a brand memorable.
Data can tell you what is happening, but creativity helps explain why customers should care. This is especially important in customer acquisition, where brands compete for attention in an increasingly crowded marketplace. The strongest campaigns are built on a simple insight supported by data and brought to life through compelling storytelling.
Balancing Innovation With Customer Focus
One of the biggest opportunities is the ability to understand customers more deeply than ever before. Brands have access to insights that can improve personalization, customer experience, and marketing effectiveness across the entire journey.
At the same time, the marketplace has become increasingly competitive. Consumers have more choices, more information, and higher expectations. Technology is evolving quickly, particularly with AI, but access to technology alone is no longer a differentiator. The challenge for leaders is determining which innovations genuinely improve the customer experience. Staying focused on the customer while adapting to change is more important than ever, and thus challenging.
Leading With Curiosity And Collaboration
For aspiring digital marketing professionals, my advice is to stay curious and focus on fundamentals. Technology and platforms will continue to evolve, but understanding customers will always be at the center of effective marketing. Learn to balance analytical thinking with creativity, remain adaptable, and never lose sight of the people behind the data.
Equally important, invest in your relationships with others. The best ideas often come from teams that trust each other, feel comfortable taking thoughtful risks, and are aligned around a common goal. While career success is often viewed as an individual achievement, I've found the strongest results come from great teams working together.
